THE STORY IN MY BONES
When I was a young boy
I thought I was the youngster
I saw in newsreels running
away from Nazis who wanted
to kill him because he was a Jew.
As the only Jew in my class,
I was hounded every day by
young Bundists who wanted
to kill me as their German American
fathers advised them to do.
In 1938 my classmate’s fathers
dressed up like Nazis to join 20,000
other American Nazis at a rally at
Madison Square in New York City.
I never felt safe until I was trained
as a soldier during the Korean War.
